I love a fine English ale and a quick trip to the beverage store one night brought me to a malt beverage product I had not tasted in a long time. The product is Wells Bombardier English Premium Ale and it had been a couple of years since I have enjoyed a bottle of this fine, tasty English ale. Would it be as good as I remember it, I wondered? I purchased a large 500 ml bottle and headed home to find out.
Pouring Wells Bombardier English Premium Ale into a glass revealed a beer that is copper/red in color with a nose that combines earthy hops with caramel and crystal malts. The foam on this ale is better than the average brew and it leaves legs as it slowly subsides. The taste of Wells Bombardier English Premium Ale combines flavors like bread/biscuits, toasted malt, caramel, and a slight nuttiness along with sweet/spicy charcter from the hops. There is a light spiciness to this beer along with some sweet, fruity flavors that are slightly orange- like. A leafy flavor is evident, and I could even detect some prune flavor and butter behind the citrus.
Wells Bombardier English Premium Ale is a quailty malt beverage product from a brewing company with many years of experience under its belt. Wells and Youngs joined forces a short time ago to create a new brewing operation known as Wells & Youngs Brewing, LTD. The fact that the Wells of old was now part of a larger brewing operation made me worry a little bit- worry that this beer’s recipe may have been altered slightly in the transition. But a quick taste confirmed that this beer is every bit as good as I remember it. Wells Bombardier English Premium Ale is a very good example of the English style and it is just as tasty today as it was in the past.
Wells Bombardier English Premium Ale is medium in body and it makes a good session ale. Most people who try this beer will find it agreeable and drinkable. Some might even say that it’s a tad too light, but I feel the balance is very nice and I plan to imbibe some more bottles of Wells Bombardier English Premium Ale whenever the desire for an English ale hits hard and won’t let go.
