Samuel Adams ranks as the most recognizable name in the craft brewing industry and its products rank among the best selling beers in the United States. Boston Beer Company- the business that manufactures the Samuel Adams product line- has produced just about every style imaginable and one of its more recent offerings is Samuel Adams Irish Red, an American version of a popular style.
Samuel Adams Irish Red Ale pours to a reddish brown color with a nose that is malty, sweet, and pruney. The foam is off- white in color and it offers a good coating on the top of your glass, even if it doesn’t last for an exceptionally long time. The taste of this beer is malty, with caramel malt flavor, a little bit of apple, some plum/prune, and notes of bread/biscuits and chocolate. There is a certain herbal taste, along with a touch of earthy hops. The body is medium to full with a somewhat oily texture.
Most people are familiar with Killian’s Irish Red, Smithwicks Irish Red, and other popular names and they have some idea what the Irish Red style should be like. Samuel Adams Irish Red is certainly a tasty beer and it offers better flavor than its closest rivals, with a fuller body and richer flavor than the popular Killian’s brand. I like the different taste stimulations it produces on the palate, but drinkers should beware that Samuel Adams Irish Red does have a certain degree of chalky character and it is also a tad cloying. Some will not appreciate these attribute, although I found them acceptable and not distracting from the overall enjoyment of the beer.
Samuel Adams Irish Red Ale is a very good beer product from Samuel Adams and it is obvious that the company put a good deal of effort into making a first class product when they formulated the recipe for Samuel Adams Irish Red Ale. It doesn’t quite reach the level of a world classic, but it is certainly better than the average Irish Read Ale and is deserving of a sampling.
