Fruit beers vary widely in taste and quality and the main problem with some of them is that they taste more like malted coolers/soda pop than actual beer. But some fruity beers are better than others and Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat is a good example of a fruit- enhanced, wheat based beer that offers some good refreshmentment without going too far with the added fruit flavor.
Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat is brewed using a wheat malt base, along with Tettnanger Noble hops and, of course, cherries. Pour your beer into a glass and you will notice that the color is a light golden/brown and the beer is quite cloudy. The foaminess isn’t too bad for a fruit beer. It starts out with a good head of foam, which eventually fades away, but it does last longer than other beers of this style.
The aroma and flavor of Samuel Adams Wheat beer are both distinctly fruity and malty. Judging by smell alone, however, you can’t quite tell if this beer is made with cherries. You can tell that it is a fruit beer, but you can’t tell what fruit was used. It is a little medicinal in the nose and you know there is fruit present, but you cannot quite tell what fruit. However, once you take a drink, the cherries are noticeable and it is obvious that this wheat ale is made with cherries and wheat. Samuel Adams offers a crisp, fruity taste and a dry finish. The overall flavor is not too sweet or too bitter.
I am not really a fan of fruit beers, but I have to admit that this one caught my attention. Since I am a beer purist, I would probably like it more if it was a straight wheat brew without the added ingredients. But in the case of Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat, the added cherries are not too bad. The beer isn’t too sweet and it will help you get through the long, hot days of summer with its refreshing taste characteristics.
