Boston Beer and its Samuel Adams brand continue to create memorable brews that span a wide range of styles. Boston Beer and its founder, Mr. Jim Koch, continue to educate the world on the greatness of beer by brewing various styles and, starting in 2005, Boston Beer began something new: It started an annual tradition that asked the public to vote on a new Samuel Adams beer, between two competitors. The first winner in this contest was Samuel Adams Brown Ale.

Samuel Adams Brown Ale is dark brown in color with an aroma of roasted malt and a head of foam that is average but leaves lace on your glass as you consume. The body of this beer is completely clear and you can see through it if held up to a light source.
Samuel Adams Brown Ale offers a toasted, biscuit- like flavor with just a touch of nuttiness, roasted malt, caramel, and light coffee. The finish hits you with the slight taste of citrus and bittering hops and while the bitterness isn’t extreme by any measure, it sticks around long enough to balance out the sweet malt.
Samuel Adams has brewed plenty of styles but Samuel Adams Brown Ale marks the first time this brewing operation has brewed a brown ale. This beer is also unique because it was the first winner in the Boston Beer Company Beer Lover’s Choice competition. It beat its competitor, Bohemian Pilsner, by a wide margin of about 64% to 36%.
This brown ale is a good- tasting one with a medium body and enough quality ingredients and complexity to measure up against many other American brown ales. Boston Beer Company combines several different malts along with English and German hops to arrive at this taste. The flavor is more malty than bitter, but it is actually balanced quite nicely.
I have sampled many brown ales and Samuel Adams Brown Ale ranks among the better examples of its style. It isn’t the best American Brown Ale I have ever tried, but it is easily better than average and it is certainly a brown ale worth trying.
