Most everyone is familiar with Corona Extra and many novice beer drinkers rank it among their favorite malt beverages.
Mexico’s most popular export beer product, Corona Extra is a light beer with little going for it aside from the cool television commercials. This product is a top- selling beer mainly thanks to its relentless advertising and it ranks among a dozen or so beer products that most every person alive has sampled at least once. Most everyone is familiar with Corona Extra and many novice beer drinkers rank it among their favorite malt beverages.
What makes Corona Extra less than appealing is its odd aroma and bland taste. The appearance of Corona Extra is typical of a mass- produced lager, which means it is light straw in color and offers perfect clarity and little foam. Examining futher, the nose of Corona Extra is one of light grain, sulphur, and alcohol, not to mention a certain level of skunkiness, thanks in no small part to the clear bottle in which Corona is packaged. Clear bottles offer no protection from light and it is precisely this fact that contributes to the skunky scent. The taste is also boring, with flavors of corn, sweet, light cereal grains, and a quickly fading hop bitterness.
So why does Corona Extra have such a following, given its less than desireable taste and character? I can think of exactly two reasons: Its advertising and the serving method. With an emphasis on the beach and getting away from it all, the advertisements strike a chord with many people, and they make Corona Extra seem worthy of a try. Then, there is the serving with limes. Most everywhere you go, when Corona Extra is served, it always has a lime wedges crammed down the neck of the bottle. This addition of citrus alters the flavor profile and, I must admit, makes it taste a little better. But what beer needs added lime juice to enhance its quality?
Corona Extra will continue to rank as a top seller regardless of what I or anyone else says about it. However, when you consider the below average qualities, Corona Extra adds up to another over- rated malt beverage product that, while popular, is obviously a top seller for all the wrong reasons.
