Boston Beer Company is well- respected in the brewing community as a pioneer in the craft beer movement. Its Samuel Adams product line is known all over the world and it has expanded its products to include dozens of styles; some of which have not been attempted by other breweries or have never been distributed on a large scale. One of these newer Samuel Adams products is Samuel Adams Blackberry Witbier, a fruity beer with witbier qualities.
Samuel Adams Blackberry Wit is a golden- colored beer with a slightly cloudy body and a slightly orange tint. This beer has a nose that combines mixed berries like blueberries and blackberries and a good pour results in a fair amount of foam and even though it doesn’t hold together for very long, it does leave a small amount of lacing as it subsides. Samuel Adams Blackberry Wit offers a taste that is fruity to be certain, but not extremely fruity, with a taste that combines blackberries and other assorted berry tastes. There is an obvious malted wheat flavor as well, along with some citrus and light spice like coriander.
I’m always very wary of fruity beers because many of them over- emphasize the fruit flavor and often do not seem like beer. But I am happy to report that Samuel Adams Blackberry Wit doesn’t taste too fruity or too sweet. It offers a sweet/dry balance and it offers a body that is a little creamy. This beer combines coriander and orange peel along with the wheat malt and blackberries, so it does have a fair amount of spice and a decent amount of complexity. The spicy character is noticeable in the finish and once it passes, the taste returns to that of fruit and grain. Hops are present also, but they are used sparingly and the spice from the coriander is what you will notice most at the close of each sip.
Samuel Adams Blackberry Wit is a good tasting beer that combines the flavors of a Belgian witbier with delicious blackberries for a taste that isn’t too sweet. It isn’t the best example of a fruit beer I have ever tried, but it does offer some good beer character and it would make a great beverage choice on a hot day. It’s fruity, but the fruit doesn’t go overboard, like many fruit- enhanced beers are known to do.
