Did beer influence the writing of the U.S. Constitution?
What important events helped to shape American history? Most people would say taxes, freedom, individuality, and so on but one important ingredient to the formation of our great land was beer. In this book, Beer in America: The Early Years 1587 to 1840: Beer’s Role in the Settling of America and the Birth of a Nation, author Gregg Smith shares some little- known secrets about beer and its influence on the American past.
Beer was enjoyed by a large percentage of early Americans and Beer in America details the important role that beer played in social and other gatherings. From the early days when the English settled the country to later days when America was a nation born anew, beer was there, quenching thirst, helping people forget their troubles, and otherwise making life more enjoyable.
These social aspects of beer are not too surprising, but what is more interesting- and the main focus of this book- would be the important events that took place in American history and the role that beer played in each. For example, the Declaration of Independence was signed in a tavern and some of our early presidents proposed the establishment of a national brewery. These and other tidbits of information are just waiting to be learned in the pages of Beer in America. There is even a section about popular drinks during colonial times and many of them will surprise and amuse the average reader.
This book is a fun read and is historically accurate. However, as much as I appreciate the author’s intentions and exultation of malt beverages, Smith does go a tad overboard in his assesment of the role of beer in these various events. Yes, beer was present at many important historical moments and many of the early founders the United States brewed and enjoyed their own beer. But this doesn’t necessarily mean that beer was the driving force in making important historical decisions. Okay, it might have played some role but reading Smith’s book, you almost get the idea that America would not exist as we know it today were it not for a few well- placed taverns.
Beer is a beverage I know and love and it has been important to Americans for centuries. Beer in America offers a history lesson from a slightly unorthodox perspective, with fun facts and information about beer and its significance. It might be a little exaggerated at times, but it is still a fun read with many facts you can share at your next keg party.
