There is a new product bearing the Yuengling name, but it doesn’t come in a keg and it isn’t made with malted barley, hops, and yeast.
The Yuengling name is expanding, but this time, the new product is ice cream. The first batch rolled off the line just yesterday, January 16, 2014 and it marks the first time in 28 years that Yuengling has ventured into the dairy foods segment.
Yuengling first made ice cream back during the days of prohibition as a means of staying in business. Today, the decision to produce ice cream is borne out of nostalgia more than the need for sales revenue. Ice cream hasn’t been part of the Yuengling portfolio since the 1980’s, but the ice cream company president, David Yuengling, feels the time is right to bring back this much- loved treat.
“It brings back good memories and it’s good to see our family product, ice cream, to come back in the market”, said Yuengling.
Yuengling ice cream is actually made by Leiby’s Dairy, a business that contracts ice cream production for other brands. The plant that makes the ice cream is located in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania and the plan is roll out the new ice cream to the Binghamton, New York area first, then expand distribution to Pittsburgh and then Virginia, with product availability in 500 stores.
Yuengling’s name should help the brand sell, but don’t expect to find any flavors featuring malted barley, hops, and yeast. Yuengling is making only traditional flavors for now, but if the brand catches on, who knows? If it proves successful, pale ale swirl, whipped IPA, and mint chocolate brown ale flavors may become as commonplace as neopolitan, butter pecan, and rocky road.
