Are you a fan of ciders? Do you like beer just as much if not more? If you like the occasional fruity cider but wish it had a little more flavor of malt, then you might enjoy a new product introduced just days ago. It is Redd’s Apple Ale, a product brewed by Redd’s Brewing Company- a Miller Coors affiliate- located in Albany, Georgia.

According to the manufacturer, this adult beverage is an apple flavored golden ale with some maltiness, but low bitterness. The ale has been described as leaning toward the sweet side with an overall profile that is (more…)

Blue Moon Fans Select Caramel Apple Spiced Ale

by bryancarey — Categories: Breweries, Competitions, Domestic — Tags: , , , , , No Comments

Blue Moon Brewing, a division of Coors Brewing, has announced the winner of its “Craft the Next Blue Moon” promotional program. The winner is Blue Moon Caramel Apple Spiced Ale and it will be offered in an upcoming Blue Moon variety pack.

Blue Moon started this latest round of competitions just a few months ago, pitting Caramel Apple Spiced Ale against two other craft creations, Dark Chocolate Bacon Porter and Blackberry Tart Ale. Blue Moon fans were asked to taste and judge each beer at designated tasting sessions around the United States. Fans were also asked to comment on ingredients, package design, etc., and then cast their votes. Caramel Apple Spiced Ale beat out its two competitors and has now won the right to be brewed and sold on a larger scale.

Blue Moon Caramel Apple Spiced Ale is brewed using apple juice and spices and the finished product has an alcohol level of 5.8 percent by volume. Look for it in the Blue Moon Variety 12- Pack sometime in August.

MillerCoors to Shift Gears with New Beer Series

by bryancarey — Categories: Beer Media, Breweries, Domestic, Macrobreweries — Tags: , , , 5 Comments

MillerCoors may be feeling a little pressure from the craft brewing industry, even if it won’t directly confess its anxiety.

MillerCoors is planning a series of smaller batch beers that it will market and distribute in a way similar to that of the craft brewing industry. The first in this series is Coors Third Shift Amber Lager and it has already debuted in parts of Nevada, Texas, and California.  The beer has been acknowledged at the 2012 World Beer Cup and it could signal a new direction for the large macrobrewer, normally associated with bland, undistinguished products.

Coors Third Shift Amber Lager has been described as a craft beer, but official word is that MillerCoors will not describe it this way. Instead, MillerCoors will promote the beer as an “invitation” beer, which, according to sources, is supposed to mean a warm- up to a craft beer; a product that is easier- drinking and priced lower than most craft beer products, making it easier to afford.

Craft beer lovers have had little to celebrate from MillerCoors, either before or after the merger of the two beer- making giants. Coors Winterfest was a good craft beer product and one of only a handful of products from either company to earn a stamp of approval from the craft beer crowd. This new beer, Coors Third Shift Amber Lager, could be the beginning of something worthwhile. It is a longshot, but we will keep our fingers crossed and hope that MillerCoors develops its new series of beer in a more craft- oriented direction.

American Craft Beer Industry Continues to Grow

The American brewing industry has changed considerably over the past few decades. Craft breweries, once considered a novelty with an uncertain future, continue to gain ground and now account for almost six percent of all beer sales volume. This may not sound like much, but it is significant when you consider that, in 1996, craft beer accounted for only about one percent of total sales volume.

Just recently, the Brewers Association compiled a list of the largest breweries in 2011 by sales volume. Here are the results:

Blue Moon Fall Seasonal: Which One Would You Choose?

Blue Moon Brewing, the craft beer branch of the widely known and distributed Coors Brewing, is preparing to launch a new seasonal beer for the Fall of 2012. Rather than leave the decision to management, Blue Moon is going to let the public select the newest release based on the results of a series of tastings held at select locations. There are three finalists under consideration:

Blue Moon Caramel Apple Spiced Ale: This beer is a blend of cinnamon and nutmeg spices combined with caramel malts and real apple juice.

Blue Moon Blackberry Tart Ale: Made with blackberries, as expected, with a taste that balances between sweet and tart and is backed by a subtle malt character.

Blue Moon Dark Chocolate Bacon Porter: The most unusual in the group, this beer is brewed with added dark chocolate and hickory smoked bacon for a unique flavor combination.

Tastings will take place in only a few states but will begin very soon and continue through the end of March, 2012. The winner will be announced later, likely in April. Here is a list of cities, dates, times, and locations for these Blue Moon tasting events:

Anheuser- Busch and SABMiller, Together as One?

Anheuser- Busch InBev, the largest brewing operation in the world, has reportedly been in talks to purchase the second largest brewer, SABMiller, in what would be one of the largest takeovers in corporate history.

According to the Brazilian news website IG, SABMiller has been talking with Anheuser- Busch InBev for some time about a potential sale of the business to its larger foe. Spokespersons on both ends decline to comment on the deal, but SABMiller shares spiked in price last week when the news hit the street.

The thought of a merger of any type between Anheuser- Busch InBev and SABMiller doesn’t sit well with many people for numerous reasons. For one, the partnership reeks of potential monopoly. Both companies are already very big and the idea of them becoming one would be like Toyota purchasing Ford Motor. These two businesses are not based in the United States anymore so any merger between the two would not be subject to U.S. anti- trust overview, but it still concerns some people just the same.

Then, there is the mere idea of old rivalries joining together in unison. As anyone in the United States knows, Miller and Anheuser- Busch were bitter rivals for decades and the thought of these two enemies becoming a single company just doesn’t feel right. Add to this the fact that SABMiller owns a portion of Molson Coors and the feelings of uneasiness become even more vivid. Anheuser- Busch, Miller, and Coors products sold by the same company?- the thought sends shivers down my tall boy.

Most financial analysts say there is no reason to worry about this deal going through because, among other things, the cost would be staggering. Anheuser- Busch InBev would have to cough up somewhere in the neighborhood of $70 to $100 billion to seal a deal this large. InBev had to borrow a huge sum of money when it purchased Anheuser- Busch back in 2008 and, as of June 30, 2011, still has more than $40 billion in debt. Given a debt load this large, coupled with the difficult global economy, it is unlikely that Anheuser- Busch InBev would be able to purchase its closest rival, even if it wanted to.

No one has confirmed or denied any rumors yet, so there is still an outside chance that this marriage may actually reach consummation. I don’t believe it will, but be prepared for the pitter-patter of Anheuser- Busch/Miller/Coors feet if the deal becomes reality.
