California’s Stone Brewing, the iconic, edgy craft brewer that has brought us such favorites as Arrogant Bastard Ale and Ruination IPA, is back with yet another popular seasonal beer, this one a variation on a popular favorite.
The beer is Stone Smoked Porter with Chipotle Peppers, a spiced- up beer released today, Cinco de Mayo, 2014. First conceived at the brewery in 2006 and highly popular with Stone Brewing founder Greg Koch, Stone Smoked Porter with Chipotle Peppers is now available to the public on a wide scale for the first time. Stone Brewing employee Chris Carroll originally came up with the idea for Stone Smoked Porter with Chipotle Peppers. He proposed brewing a beer with added spice as a special Cinco de Mayo brew. It caught on quickly and has now earned its place in the Stone seasonal lineup.
“After Chris pitched his idea, we gave it a shot by making cask-conditioned batches of the beer to be served as a special offering at Stone Company Store – Escondido,” explains Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele. “By melding Stone Smoked Porter with chipotle peppers, we found the chilies provided an enhanced roast flavor and perfect complement to the peat-smoked malt. There is a subtle taste of heat in the finish that balances well with the coffee and cocoa flavors found in the base beer.”
Stone Smoked Porter with Chipotle Peppers was first released on a national basis in 2012. Sold in 12 oz. bottles back then, along with Stone Smoked Porter with Vanilla Bean, Stone Smoked Porter with Chipotle Peppers developed a following even more intense than its taste. It was enough to convince Stone Brewing management to bring the beer back for another seasonal run, this time in bomber bottles and on draft, with broader distribution than before.
