Samuel Adams Boston Lager is the flagship brand of the Boston Beer Company and it played a key role in leading the craft beer revolution that began in the 1980’s and is still going strong today. The creation of Boston Beer founder Jim Koch, Samuel Adams Boston Lager is actually a revived beer recipe from Jim Koch’s great, great granfather, Louis Koch. The elder Koch formulated the original recipe from which Samuel Adams Boston Lager is based and he sold his product under the name Louis Koch Lager throughout the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
Samuel Adams Boston Lager is certainly better than the average lager and its many positive qualities become quickly noticeable. The appearance of Samuel Adams Boston Lager is one of its many strong points and it combines a golden/amber hue with a nose that is sweet and caramel- like with a touch of floral notes. Not only is the aroma enticing, Samuel Adams Boston Lager is also known for its rocky, sturdy head of foam that stands up during the course of drinking and continues to impress right to the last swallow.
As for the flavor of Samuel Adams Boston Lager, it is certainly good, with the taste of caramel malt, toasted malt, and biscuits up front, followed by the finishing touches offered by grassy and earthy hops in the finish. Even the aftertaste is pleasant, with the taste of toasted malt and German hops lingering long after you take your final sip.
Samuel Adams Boston Lager doesn’t taste quite as rich and flavorful as it did back in the late 1980’s. I don’t know if Boston Beer altered the recipe or if it just seems different because of my growing familiarity with craft brew, but Samuel Adams Boston Lager seems a little less full- bodied than it did when it was first introduced. It doesn’t seem as impressive as it once did, but it is still a very good all- purpose brew that enjoys millions of fans in the United States and around the world who cannot seem to get enough of that great German hop flavor.
