What comes to mind when you envision a great Oktoberfest? Most would agree that beer, Oompah music, lederhosen, bratwurst, and sauerkraut are important components of any Oktoberfest event. But there is an Oktoberfest of a different type scheduled for Saturday, October 4, 2014 in Santa Monica, California and it’s already grabbing attention for its unique twist on this popular occasion. It’s the Vegan Oktoberfest, the first event of its kind, coming to the Los Angeles area. Great Beer Now plans to be in attendance, reporting on the Oktoberfest and sharing news through social media and I welcome you to join me at this inaugural event.
No Meat, No Problem
The idea of a vegan Oktoberfest might sound unusual at first. How, you might wonder, can an Oktoberfest event take place without the German sausage, cheese, and other foods common to this type of event? Festival goers need not worry, however, for there are vegan alternatives to each of these foods, not to mention ordinary versions of German/Bavarian favorites that are already vegan and require no alteration. Guests can enjoy Southern Fried Vegan in place of bratwurst along with potato pancakes, German style pretzels, ice cream, and much more, including gluten- free options.
Fill it to the Rim
An Oktoberfest isn’t complete without beer and the Vegan Oktoberfest will feature plenty of malt beverages. Participating breweries include Ninkasi Brewing, Einstock, The Dudes’, Lammsbrau, Sierra Nevada, Venice Duck Brewery, Four Sons Brewery, Karl Strauss, Eel River, Ace Ciders, Epic Brewing, Modern Times, Bison Organic Beer, Oskar Blues, Drake’s, Coronado Brewing, Angel City, Golden Road, Anderson Valley, Saint Archer, Bravery, Lagunitas, Hangar 24, and many more. And like with the food, there will be gluten free beers and ciders available.
A Festival for a Cause
Vegan Oktoberfest 2014 is more than just a place to enjoy delicious food and beer. The organizers of this event are also working with an animal rights charity, Expand Animal Rights Now, and will donate a portion of proceeds to this worthwhile animal rights cause.
