Stone Brewing Co. has yet another new beer in the works, slated for May 19, 2014 release.
The new beer is called Collective Distortion IPA, a collaborative beer inspired by several individuals with musical backgrounds. Stone brewmaster Mitch Steele, who is also a guitarist for Craigsband and Stone Brewing’s own house band, has joined forces with rock guitarist Keri Kelli (musician with Alice Cooper, Skid Row, etc) and keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth (musician for the String Cheese Incident) to create a double IPA containing excessive doses of malted barley along with elderberries and coriander. It will be available in 22 oz. bomber bottles and on draft in places where Stone Brewing is presently sold.
Brewmaster Mitch Steele says the choice of ingredients took time and experimentation.
“To make sure we selected the best herb combination, we tried nearly a dozen different infusions with Stone IPA and ultimately found that elderberry and coriander provided a wonderful augment to the various hop characters”, says Steele. “The entire collaboration has been a unique experience. I’m always excited when the opportunity to combine two of my favorite passions, craft beer and music, comes up.”
Collective Distortion IPA is a complex beer featuring flavors such as floral, citrus, and lemons with a solid malt backbone. The beer uses Vic’s Secret hops, a virtually unknown hop varietal from Australia, resulting in a beer that can accurately be described as a hophead’s delight.
“Both in music and in brewing, one has to take risks to reap great rewards and with this beer, we brought both worlds together to create a tour de force”, said Hollingsworth.
“Never being the one to be complacent, I said to the guys. ‘Let’s make the biggest, baddest, beast of an IPA we can using some hops new to Stone and a few interesting ingredients without trying to reinvent the wheel,” said Kelli. “I think we really brought the hammer down and cranked this one up. One sip of this beast and you will taste the unforgiving nectar of the gods that is Collective Distortion IPA!”
Stone’s Collective Distortion IPA weighs in at 9.3 percent alcohol by volume and contains 90 IBU of bitterness. It’s available for only a limited time so grab a bomber bottle while it lasts.
