Freetail Brewing: Texas Number One Brewpub

Texas’ craft beer scene is still in its developmental stages but hundreds of ambitious men and women are working hard to make Texas the premier state in the union for microbrewed beer. One man who is helping the craft beer revolution is Scott Metzger, owner and CEO of San Antonio’s critically acclaimed Freetail Brewing Company. Here are the facts:

Freetail Brewing

Name:Freetail Brewing

Location:4035 North Loop 1604, Suite 105, San Antonio

Organization:Brewpub/Restaurant

Hours of Operation: Sunday, from Noon to Midnight; Monday from 4pm to Midnight; Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30am to Midnight

I visited Freetail Brewing in October, 2011 and found it easy to find, family- friendly, and every bit a restaurant as much as a brewery. The brewpub is located just outside the 1604 loop, in an elevated position that allows for nice views of downtown San Antonio and surrounding areas. A small windmill in back of the building makes it easy to find. The windmill, I was told, is non- functioning and only for show, but it does aid in the location process.

One of many pleasant surprises at Freetail Brewing is the large number of beer products offered. Freetail has produced dozens over its few years of existence and many have been retired and/or were featured only as seasonal products, but there are still a large number in the active rotation. When I visited, there were about twelve Freetail products on tap and a recent check of the Freetail website reveals the following malt beverages presently available:

La Rubia

Rye Wit

Freetail Ale

Self Regarde

Round Earth West Indies Pale Ale

Prickly Retail

Brettanolocator

Ate

Hypothesis E

Bandito

Tadarida Oscura

Rubio Fumondo

4shadow

Gremlyn

Prickly Fairy Peril

La Muerta 2011

La Muerta2010

Quite an impressive list, wouldn’t you say? Not all beers listed will be available at all times, but Freetail Brewing tries to keep ten to twelve products flowing at any moment. And the products themselves are just as interesting as their creative names. There is a pleasant surprise in every sip at Freetail Brewing Company.

Food is an important component to any brewpub and Freetail Brewing certainly takes its food seriously. The menu is divided among:

Appetizers

Salads

Specialty Pizzas

Sandwiches and Wraps

Desserts

Prices are reasonable at Freetail Brewing and many of the menu items seem tailor- made for a specific Freetail Beer. The stone- hearth pizzas are not only delicious and great with beer, they have been recognized by critics for their distinct craftsmanship and amazing taste.

Entertainment at Freetail Brewing is provided by nine high- definition television sets and two 100+ inch screens. With such a large number of screens, guests can treat themselves to non- stop sporting action and, depending on popular demand, other television programming as well. And if you would rather partake in an outdoor atmosphere, consider moving to the outdoor patio and watching the sun set while enjoying your food and brew.

Freetail Brewing is supportive of the craft brewing industry in Texas and it backs that support through its “guest” brewery taps: Kegs of craft beer from a Texas craft brewery, tapped and ready to drink. The guest brewery varies, but some of the featured breweries have included St. Arnold, 512 Brewing, Live Oak Brewing, Independence Brewing, Real Ale Brewing, Southern Star, and others. This is a nice gesture on the part of Freetail Brewing and it shows the businesses’ commitment to Texas craft beer industry.

Freetail Brewing presently maintains only its only location in San Antonio, but it has plans to expand in due time. Houston residents may recall that Freetail Brewing was planning to expand to the downtown area this year, but was forced to place its plans on hold. I asked owner Scott Metzger about this when I visited and he said that Houston has not been completely ruled out. The expansion has only been placed on hold until other concerns are addressed.

Freetail Brewing is certainly a place of distinction and it has several rewards and special recognition to prove it. Beer Advocate ranks it as the number one brewpub in all of Texas and it has been recognized by the San Antonio Express- News Critics Choice in 2009 and was awarded a Silver Medal in 2010 as the “Best Place for a Cold Beer.” San Antonio Magazine selected it as the “Best Place for a Beer” in 2009 and 2010, further solidifying its position as San Antonio’s finest craft beer establishment. Some of its malt beverages have also enjoyed special recognition and continue to win the hearts of critics and casual beer fans in San Antonio and beyond.

San Antonio is a city loaded with historic charm in a state noted for its independence and colorful past. Brewing has a strong history in Texas and is presently in the midst of a full- fledged revival thanks to the brewing creativity and ambitions of hundreds of men and women across the state. Scott Metzger’s Freetail Brewing Company is a perfect example of what can happen when ambition meets creativity and his brewpub is one you don’t want to miss if you happen to visit the San Antonio area.

by nitengale32 — Categories: Beer Reviews, Beer Travel, Breweries — Tags: , , No Comments

Excerpt . . .

As a fan of craft beers, I’m always eager to try out local microbreweries. My favorite in the Phoenix metro area is Four Peaks Brewing Company. Located close to the ASU campus at 1340 E. 8th St. in Tempe, it is easy to find. Their hours are from 10 am – 2 am on Sunday, and 11 am – 2 am Monday through Saturday.

Beers: They have eight year-round varieties. By far, my favorite is Hop Knot, which is an awesome hop-heavy I.P.A. with an alcohol content of 6.7%. Coming in second is their Oatmeal Stout, which has an incredible creamy-malted chocolate flavor.

Second Annual Milwaukee Brewfest is Almost Here

by bryancarey — Categories: Beer Travel, Breweries, Festivals — Tags: , , , , No Comments

Milwaukee is a city synonymous with beer, so it isn’t surprising that the city of Milwaukee has a brew fest or two. One that is coming up in a few weeks is going to be the second in what is shaping up to be many years of beer sampling and entertainment. It is the Second Annual Milwaukee Brewfest. Here is a quick list of facts:

Event: The Second Annual Milwaukee Brewfest

      Date: Saturday, July 30, 2011

Time: 3pm to 7pm for general admission; VIP entrance begins at 2pm

Place: Old Coast Guard Pavillion Park

Cost: $40 in advance; $45 at the entrance. VIP tickets cost $55 in advance; $60 at entrance, and include free parking. Mastercard and Visa are accepted for admission payment

      Parking cost: About $5

Last year marked the first for this event and it proved many things to the organizers, but chief among them is the fact that Milwaukee area residents love craft beer and enjoy festivals. The response last year was overwhelming, and organizers of the event have responded in kind, quadrupling the facility locations and tripling the craft beers to sample.

This year’s festival will sport three large tents showcasing more than 100 craft beers from Milwaukee, other part of Wisconsin, and across the Uinted States and the world. Milwaukee’s own Lakefront Brewing, Stonefly Brewing, Waterfront Brewing, and many others will attend along with national breweries such as North Coast, Left Hand Brewing, Blue Moon, Abita, Shiner, and many more.

Beer is the main event at the Second Annula Milwaukee Brewfest, but it is only the beginning. The fest will also include delicious food from local vendors, educational homebrewing demonstrations, entertaining exhibits and games, and dazzling works of art from local artists and craftsmen. And let’s not forget the 2011 Miss Brewfest- she will be crowned during the afternoon’s festivities.

No brewfest would be complete without sponsors and the Milwaukee Brewfest has plenty, including food and beverage contributors such as Brew City Tools, Rainforest Beverages, Whole Foods, etc., along with other business sponsors such as Southwest Vacations, Rogansshoes, Ben’s Cycle, and many more. And like last year, the Milwaukee Brewfest is going to help out local residents in need through its partnership with the Hunger Task Force. Those who bring two cans of non- perishable food to the Milwaukee Brewfest store will receive $5 off admission and a percentage of proceeds will benefit the Hunger Task Force, Children’s Oncology Services, and the Museum of Beer and Brewing.

The Second Annual Milwaukee Brewfest is still young, but it is growing in popularity and sponsorship. This year’s festival is going to be even bigger and better than last year with expansion on all fronts. So mark your calendars and head to the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin for an afternoon of fun and craft drinking adventure.

New Republic Brewing is Open for Business

by bryancarey — Categories: About Beer, Beer Travel, Breweries — Tags: , , , , No Comments

There is a new brewery in the state of Texas, adding to the growing presence of craft breweries in the Lone Star State.

New Republic Brewing, a small startup craft brewing operation located in College Station, has received its license from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and can now legally produce its malt beverage products. The state of Texas approved New Republic’s application in early May, 2011, making the small brewery the newest in what is shaping up to be a year of consistent craft brewery expansion in the state.

Dean Brundage and John Januskey are the two men behind New Republic Brewing. They bring their knowledge of homebrewing to the company and so far, they have two products in the brewing stages: Bellows American Amber Ale and Skylight German Dunkleweiss. They plan to keg their beer and sell it to local establishments in College Station and nearby Bryan. These cities are close to the Houston metropolitan area so, in due time, it is highly probable that New Republic Brewing will sell its products in the Bayou city.

New Republic Brewing hasn’t opened for tours yet, but it plans to do so this summer. The brewery’s two founders are ambitious and are fully aware of the marketing and PR potential of tours. They plan to begin tours shortly, as soon as everything is ready.

New Republic Brewing is still young, but its aggressive approach and tasty products are bound to make a splash in the College Station area. Craft brewing in Texas is still a little behind where one would expect considering the size and population of the state. But Texas is slowly catching up and New Republic Brewing is certainly a sign of more great things to come.

Texas Beer Festival coming soon to the Houston area

by bryancarey — Categories: Beer Travel, Festivals — Tags: , , , , No Comments

Everything is bigger in Texas, or so the saying goes. Texas is not only geographically large, it also has a reputation for size and excess in several areas and Texas natives speak of the state’s “big” legacy with a sense of pride and independence.

There is one area where Texas lags and that happens to be craft beer. The Lone Star state is making steady progress, however, and a sure sign of this is the first annual Texas Beer Festival. Here are the facts:

Who: Craft Brewing Revolutionary Guard, LLC

      What: The Texas Beer Festival

Where: Humble Convention Center Area, Humble Texas

When: Saturday, May 7, from 1pm to 10pm

Why: To celebrate the Texas craft beer industry

Since the Texas Beer Festival is a celebration of Texas craft beers, thirsty patrons can expect to see many Texas breweries in attendance. Austin’s Jester King, Independence Brewing, 512 Brewing, Thirsty Planet, and Circle Brewing will be there, as will Texas favorites such as Shiner, Real Ale, Rahr & Sons, and New Republic. The Houston area will be represented by St. Arnold Brewery, No Label Brewing, Southern Star, and Kreuz Creek.

Craft beer enthusiasts like to broaden their horizons and for that reason, festival guests can expect craft beer from breweries outside of Texas as well. Old favorites such as Sierra Nevada, Stone Brewing, Leinenkugel, Kona Brewing, Victory Brewing, Boston Beer, and other U.S. craft brewing operations will peddle their suds. And there will even be some foreign brew to sample and enjoy, including beer from Guinness, Fuller, Newcastle, Harp, Paulaner, Smithwicks, and many more.

Admission to this event is $34, if purchased in advance, or $40 at the door. Admission includes 12 tickets for 2 oz. beer samples. This isn’t much, but never fear: Guests can purchase more tickets for additional samples at the event. Each additional ticket (which is also good for food or other beverages) is only $1.00.

The Humble convention center is located close to Houston’s Bush Airport and there are plenty of hotels and other accomodations in the area. Tickets still remain, but don’t wait until the last minute- logon to the Texas Beer Festival web site and purchase/print your tickets today.
