Brewery Spotlight: New South Brewing, in Myrtle Beach SC

Established in 1998 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, New South Brewing is a small craft brewing operation producing a few thousand barrels annually (as of Spring, 2012). Its beer products span a nice variety of styles and its products are available on tap in area restaurants/taverns, as well as in cans in local retail outlets.

New South Brewing hand crafts its beers and when I visited, it was also hand- canning its beers; a tedious process, indeed, but it demonstrates the commitment to bring good craft beer to the local populace and to tourists frequenting the area. For its first ten years of existence, New South Brewing was strictly a draft- only brewing operation. The company started canning in 2009 to meet the demands of consumers who (more…)

Interview Spotlight: Alaskan Brewing Company’s Mike King

by bryancarey — Categories: About Beer, Award Winning, Breweries, Domestic, Microbrews — Tags: , , , , , No Comments

Alaska is often referred to as the Last Frontier, and for good reason. Our northernmost state is not only far removed from the rest of the United States, it is also our most unspoiled state in terms of human development, with much of it still in its primitive, natural form. For this reason, we don’t often associate Alaska with major industries, but one business that is growing and thriving in the capital city of Juneau is Alaskan Brewing Company. This brewing operation was founded in 1986 and it continues to wow consumers with its delicious malt beverages and attention to detail.

Alaskan Brewing products just recently entered the Houston market and they have had a noticeable impact on the craft beer scene as Houstonians sample Alaskan Brewing White Ale, Amber, IPA, and others for the first time and discover their distinct taste and quality. I had the chance to converse with some Alaskan Brewing personell, one of whom spends his days combining ingredients, pitching yeast, and otherwise assuring that Alaskan Brewing is able to meet consumer demands and maintain its high level of quality. His name is Mike King, and he offered up some insightful responses to questions related to his brewery and the business of beer in general:

1.         Craft beer continues to gain popularity and the number of breweries and brewpubs continue to increase. What do you see happening to craft beer over the next few years in terms of growth? What obstacles, if any, will need to be overcome?  I think that the current growing popularity of craft beer revolves around the (more…)

Boston Beer’s Longshot 2012 Winners Available While They Last

Boston Beer Company, makers of the Samuel Adams product line, has released its 2012 Longshot Homebrew Contest winners and their beer is now available in six packs. Boston Beer began distribution of this beer in February, 2012 and it should continue to make itself available for at least a short time longer. The six packs include two bottles each of the three winning entries. They are:

A Dark Night in Munich- This Bavarian style wheat beer was brewed by Corey Martin. It has a roasted malt character, sweet caramel flavor profile, and a creamy mouthfeel. Bread and dark fruits add to the complexity of this drinkable and enjoyable beer. It has an alcohol content of 5.9 percent by volume.

Rating: 7 cheers out of 10

Five Crown Imperial Stout- Joe Formanek created this beer. It is a Russian imperial stout with a big, rich, malty taste combined with chocolate and a very full body. The beer is thick and heavy, pouring from the bottle like syrup. It is a warming brew with fruity esters and a high alcohol content of 8.9 percent by volume.

Rating: 9 cheers out of 10

Derf’s Secret Alt- This German Altbier is a full- bodied beer with a nicely balanced flavour that offers equal attention to the hops and malt. Some of the flavors present in this beer include nuts, roasted barley, chocolate, caramel, and yeast, with some citrus. This beer has an alcohol level of 9.3 percent by volume, making it the strongest beer in this years’ Longshot winners.

Rating: 8 cheers out of 10

Look for the 2012 Longshot winners at your favorite store where other Samuel Adams products are sold. The beer retails for about $9.99 per six pack and offers a good sample of the winners without the necessity of purchasing a full six pack of each. The Longshot six pack may not be around much longer, so purchase it while you can.

North Coast Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout: Full Bodied and Delicious

I love all styles of beer but as anyone close to me knows, I hold a special place on my palate for dark beers, especially stouts. I like the rich, roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate flavors commonplace to this style and I seize any opportunity to sample a new example of this style. But sometimes, when I crave a stout, I want something tried and true and the perfect example is North Coast Brewing’s outstanding Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout.

Beer Bio:

Style: Imperial Stout

Calories: 303 (!) per 12 oz. serving

Carbs: 13 grams per 12 oz. serving

Alcohol Content: 9 percent alcohol by volume

Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout is a very dark, almost black colored stout and a good pour will produce a large amount of foam likely to overflow your glass. The nose on this stout combines sweet, roasted malt, coffee, and even a hint of alcohol. The flavor follows the nose, with tastes of roasted malt along with coffee, chocolate, and a touch of fruitiness. The alcohol level of this ale is high, but it isn’t readily noticeable in the taste.

Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout is a delicious example of its style and my favorite among the many great brews produced by California’s North Coast Brewing Company. This stout has a complex and delicious flavor profile that continues to please with each passing sip. The roasted malt and other qualities make it a great sipping beer, a great dessert beer, or the perfect companion to serve alongside a grilled steak or other hearty fare.

Old Rasputin is big, bold, and delicious with a great flavor profile and nice balance between the malt and hops. I find that it tastes best if allowed to warm up just a bit, between about 50 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit. At this temperature, the complex flavors are the most pronounced and the taste is the most enjoyable. I also find that this stout has a very enjoyable aftertaste. Long after my final sip, I could still taste the roasted malt. It lingers for a while and continues to please the palate long after the final swig.

If there is one area of concern with Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout, it would have to be the alcohol level. At 9 percent by volume, Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout contains about 80 percent more alcohol than the standard, 5 percent brew. What this means is that the alcohol can catch up with you very quickly. Drink four 12 oz. bottles and you have consumed an amount of alcohol equal to approximately seven bottles of beer containing 5 percent alcohol, so you have to be very careful. In addition to that, the calories in this beer are very high. It is one of the few malt beverages with more than 300 calories per 12 oz. serving and its caloric content is more than double that of the typical American mainstream lager.

Stouts are a real treat, particularly if the brewer has paid attention to detail and brewed the stout to be bold and beautiful. Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout is exactly that- a rich, full- bodied beer with much to offer and much to celebrate. It’s an award winning beer and it rates as one of my all- time favorite American made stouts and one of the best examples of its style found anywhere.

St. Arnold Brewery Continues its Rapid Growth

by bryancarey — Categories: Award Winning, Breweries, Domestic, Microbrews — Tags: , , , , No Comments

The Texas craft beer scene continues to improve and leading the pack is St. Arnold Brewery. Headquartered in Houston, St. Arnold is the oldest craft brewery in the state and the market leader in total output. Today, St. Arnold announced its production figures for the 2011 year and, once again, it reported an all- time record with 40,416 barrels of beer shipped.

St. Arnold has been growing at a fast clip for many years as more individuals discover its many distinctive products. A quick look back at previous year’s shipments reveals the consistent, rapid growth of the business:

Year                          Barrels Shipped

2007                                17,811

2008                                22,749

2009                                25,710

2010                                31,445

2011                                40,416

As the above numbers indicate, St. Arnold added 8,971 barrels in 2011, representing a growth rate of about 28.5% from 2010 to 2011. In both percentage terms and in the number of barrels shipped, 2011 ranks among the best years in the companies history and if this percentage growth rate continues, St. Arnold will more than double its present size in just three more years.

Looking at shipments of individual brands, St. Arnold Fancy Lawnmower, a Great American Beer Festival winner, remains the company’s top seller, with a 42% increase in shipments from 2010. St. Arnold Amber Ale and St. Arnold Elissa IPA rank second and third respectively in 2011 and both enjoyed significant increases in total shipments. What is even more impressive is that ALL St. Arnold products, including seasonal and special edition releases, witnessed shipment increases in 2011. Even the best managed breweries in the nation usually have at least one laggard in the product lineup, so for St. Arnold to see all of its shipments increase for all brands is a remarkable achievement.

The large breweries are struggling to maintain market share and many of the big brand beers like Budweiser and Michelob are in decline, but the future looks bright at Saint Arnold Brewing Company. The business is well- positioned to further increase its production and experience yet another record breaking year in 2012.

Great Lakes Christmas Ale makes me yearn for Christmas in July

by bryancarey — Categories: Award Winning, Breweries, Domestic, Microbrews — Tags: , , , No Comments

Holidays are a time for celebration and cheer and most would agree that the holiday spirit is strongest during Christmas. This is also one of the best times of the year to enjoy special seasonal beer and one of the better holiday brews is Great Lakes Christmas Ale, a seasonal brew from Cleveland Ohio’s Great Lakes Brewing Company.

 Beer Bio:

Style: Holiday Ale

Calories: 199 per 12 oz. serving

Carbs: 20 grams per 12 oz. serving

Alcohol by Volume: 7.5 percent by volume

Great Lakes Christmas Ale sports a copper/golden color with a nose of holiday spices. This beer offers an active level of carbonation that, when contrasted against the copper body looks like snowflakes falling from the sky. Ok, carbonation goes up, not down, but you get the idea. Based on appearance alone, it looks quite nice and is certainly enticing.

The taste of Great Lakes Christmas Ale continues in the spirit of Christmas. Flavors of cinnamon, ginger, honey, caramel malt, and clove dance around on the palate. The flavor, with its combination of malts and spice rack ingredients, reminds me of the great taste of spiced Christmas cookies and for this reason, I like to enjoy a bottle or two of Great Lakes Christmas Ale as an after- dinner drink, either with a sweet treat or as a dessert all by itself.

Great Lakes Christmas Ale is a tad bitter and there is a brief alcoholic bite in the finish, but the sweet malts and spice quickly bring the taste back in line. The pleasantness of these flavors helps you forget the slight bitter edge at the close and many will find it good for balancing the taste and preventing over- sweetness or cloying tendencies.

Christmas only comes once per year and considering the delicious, creative brews offered by so many breweries, it is a shame we cannot have Christmas celebrations more frequently. Great Lakes Christmas Ale is one of my favorite winter warmers and I recommend grabbing a six pack or two if you happen to be in Ohio or someplace else where Great Lakes Brewing products are sold.
